Jackson Pollock is one of the most important and influential American artists of the 20th century. Instead of a brush and an easel, he used sticks and trowels to throw paint onto canvases on the ground.

Pollock definitely influenced the pants from the 1986 Barbie and the Rockers fashion for Derek.

Along with the pants, the fashion included an oversized,  leather-like neon green jacket with the Rocker’s logo on the back, a black shiny textured T-shirt with a totally ‘80s graphic, a leather-like neon orange cummerbund, and neon orange socks.  The fashion also included the same white tennis shoes that were ubiquitous with Ken fashions in the ‘80s.

Unfortunately, time has not been kind to this fashion. Like all of the leather looks from this period, the fabric is now very fragile and is easily damaged.

PICTURED RIGHT:  Rockers Ken wearing Barbie and the Rockers Fashions for Derek #1177 from 1986. Style Magic Whitney is wearing #3392 Concert Tour Fashion from 1987.  Fans of the tv show Heroes will recognize the steel sculpture Double Ascension by Herbert Bayer at Arco Plaza in downtown Los Angeles.

The same Pollock-inspired fabric was used for a female Rocker’s fashion from the same year.  Interestingly enough, the prototype for this fashion shows a different print.

Again, the print shows up in this foreign Barbie Rock Stars fashion.

Finally, the fabric reappeared (in the only real Ken fashion in the article): a variation of 1986 Fashion Classics #2892 K Mart fashion.

Kevin was a nice-looking kid, and he was obviously an art connoisseur because his shirt from this 1990 High School Fashion shows an undeniable Pollock influence. It makes me wonder why Skipper broke up with him.

It must have been those grey acid-washed pants.

PICTURED LEFT:  Kevin and Teen Time Courtney are visiting the famous sculpture cheekily and comprehensively titled: "Chas' Stainless Steel, Mark Thompson's Airplane Parts, About 1000 Pounds of Stainless Steel Wire, Gagosian's Beverly Hills Space, at MOCA (2001-2002)"  It is a monumental sculpture made out of airplane parts and is part of the permanent collection of MOCA, The Museum of Contermary Art, Los Angeles.
